Speculation on bisexuality[]
The poem, In Memoriam about a man’s love for another man includes sexual imagery, the poet compares his sorrow to the sorrow of a loving widower who misses his late wife in bed.
Tears of the widower, when he sees
A late-lost form that sleep reveals, And moves his doubtful arms, and feels
Her place is empty, fall like these; [1]
There has been speculation that Tennyson may have experienced gay feelings for his friend though there is no question that Tennyson was strongly attracted to women. [2] If Tennyson had bisexual feelings it is unclear whether he acted on these feelings. Tennyson certainly concealed any gay feelings or actions that may or may not have arisen.
