Selby Ave is a semi-major street in St. Paul. The 21A bus goes down Selby, and connects to Lake Street in Minneapolis via the Lake-Marshall bridge over the river. Selby and Lake both saw gang and drug activity in the 90s.

One block east of the intersection of Selby and Griggs was the Speedboat Gallery and Motor Oil, and a Vespa repair shop in the back. Motor Oil was a punk-ish coffee shop and Speedboat had art on the main level. Down the very rickety staircase from the gallery was the space where they held shows. It was a windowless, 100 year old basement, unlikely to be approved by the City to host such crowds. Bands such as Green Day, Bratmobile, and NOFX played here in the late 90s and early 2000s. The neighborhood was an early mixed-race neighborhood in the City, and many bands and artists were born here or lived in this neighborhood at some time or another. Central High School is just two blocks north of the Speedboat. from You Gotta Dance
